Why I Started Mikhiyah NGO

Nagnouma Sako

A Love Letter to Our Humanity
My name is Nagnouma Sako, and I started Mikhiyah for one simple reason:
we are human before we are “okay.”
“Mikhiyah” means Humanity not the polished kind, but the real one. The kind that gets tired. The kind that says “I’m fine” while absolutely not being fine.
The kind that deserves support before things fall apart (not as an emergency response).
I’ve spent years listening to children searching for words, adults carrying too much, and elders navigating change with quiet strength. I’ve learned that people don’t need to be broken to deserve care they need permission, language, and community. (And sometimes a reminder to breathe.)
Mikhiyah was born at the intersection of mental health knowledge and lived experience rooted in community care, cultural awareness, and a deep respect for the human nervous system. It exists because healing doesn’t happen in isolation. It happens in conversations, shared moments, and yes laughter, even when things are heavy.
Here, children learn to name feelings instead of hiding them.
Adults learn that asking for help is not weakness it’s wisdom.
Elders are supported with dignity, humor, and presence because humanity does not age out.
We take mental health seriously but not ourselves too seriously. There is room here for honesty and humor, for growth without perfection, for being real without explanation.
Mikhiyah exists to remind us of something simple and powerful:
being human is enough.
